Walmart's Pharmacy Review

Another Reason NOT to Shop at Walmart

Last year I changed my Plan D to Humana's Walmart Drug Plan. Just by making that switch I saved $35 per month in premiums. I do not have a problem with Humana; the opposite is true. Whenever I have had to deal with them, they have bent over backwards to answer my questions. The problem is that I have to get my prescriptions through Walmart.

I have been on their plan since January (it's September now) and I have seven prescriptions, three of which I have to fill every month because of their cost. I have yet to have a prescription pickup be correct. I have even called ahead twice to make sure it was ready only to drive 26 miles and find out it wasn't.

They seem to go out of their way to be disorganized and to serve each customer at a snail's pace. The line is always long and when you finally get to the clerk you find out the Rx isn't ready, the pricing or quantity is wrong, or it's not even in the system. Talk about frustrating!

From what I have observed, their computers are often wrong, which makes me very skeptical to sign up for their mail order program or for automatic refills.

The monthly savings are substantial for me. For Seroquel and Cymbalta, I save well over $100 per month by getting them through Walmart. I am on Medicare and each nickel is squeezed until it hollers, so I feel I really don't have a choice.

Anyone else have problems with Walmart pharmacy?

I've not encountered problems to the extent you've experienced, but it always seems like a madhouse on both sides of the counter. I'm fortunate to have a locally-owned and operated small town pharmacy that offers prices competitive to Walmart and knows me by name to boot.

Hi wordsmith,

Good points. They definitely operate with a very slim inventory...which helps save money and lower prices...but also leaves patients having to return when they run out.

One option is to have them mail you the balance when they run out. They will do it.

Thanks for sharing!

As you were kind enough to read my hub, I thought I'd check yours out. I can truly attest to the snail's pace of Wal Mart Pharmacies.

My biggest concern is the non-pharmacist employees that are handling prescriptions. Aren't there laws against that? I would think that since prescriptions are a controlled substance there would be regulations about that. Heck, there are regulations against everything else!

Great hub, and I'm sorry you are finding these problems. Sometimes you can contact the pharmaceutical company if you are having trouble paying for your medications.

Good luck.
